In a Catalan custom that is believed to date to the 18th century, colles castelleres, or teams, compete to build the highest, most unique tower of people.
In the Ring
The 2010 competition took place on Oct. 3. Some of the towers were built in the city's bullring. Others were constructed in the streets.
On the Way Up
The colles use a variety of strategies and techniques. Some of them, like the Xiquets de Tarragona, use children for the uppermost tiers, presumably because they weigh less.
Watch It!The construction requires a precise choreography, as the participants must coordinate their ascent to ensure that the balance of the structure remains sound.
Way Up
The structures can employ as many as 200 people.
Big CrowdThe 2010 edition marks the 23rd time the competition has been held.
Oh No!Members of the Xiquets de Tarragona fall during their attempt.
Triumph
The 2010 competition was won by the Castellers do Villafranca.
